Fourth and Fifth Grade Judaic Studies

 

¨      Torah – Studying the Books of B’midbar (Numbers) and D’varim (Deuteronomy), students learn about their responsibility to strive toward holiness by observing the b’rit (covenant) between God and the Jewish People; studying Nevi’im (Prophets) students learn the messages of the prophets

¨      Avodah (“work” to find sacred connections to God, community and self) – Students learn that kevah (fixed prayer) and kavannah (intention brought to prayer) are complimentary aspects of worship and, together, help make sacred connections to the Jewish People and strengthen their relationship with God

¨      G’milut Chasadim (acts of loving kindness) – Performing acts of g’milut chasadim, students learn how behavior affects relationships; as part of klal Yisrael (the community of Israel), students learn they are responsible to “reach out” and actively support and sustain the Jewish community 

Students study Jewish values by examining some of the most important and sustaining values of our tradition. They also learn about dramatic moments of the twentieth century through the lives of influential Jews within the worlds of sports, science, film and politics.

Traditional practices, modern observances, blessings, stories and ethical values provide deeper meaning to Jewish life-cycle celebrations.

Jewish holiday study includes history, practice, relevant mitzvot (commandments), minhagim (customs), Hebrew and English blessings, biblical and rabbinic texts and stories, related rituals, foods, and symbols.

Fourth and Fifth Grade Hebrew Studies

Fourth Grade - Aleph

Employing the best in contemporary educational theory, students:

¨      Solidify Hebrew consonant, vowel recognition and Hebrew script writing

¨      Learn to read selected prayers and blessings, including Sh’ma, V’ahavta and Aleinu

¨      Increase Hebrew vocabulary

¨      Learn basic pronunciation and reading rules

Fifth Grade – Bet

Students enjoy learning Hebrew with fully integrated computer applications that capture their imagination and attention. Studies include prayers for Shabbat services as well as prayers and blessings for the home, including: Modeh Ani, Brachot, Brachot shel Mitzvah, Brachot shel Shabbat, Kiddush, Havdalah, Brachot shel Yom Tov, Mah Nishtanah, Birkat Hamazon and Sh’ma.
